NANOTECHNOLOGY ECO WEEK (2015) WORKSHOP WITH KARDS
NANOTECHNOLOGY MEETS DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL in ECO WEEK
KARD architects successfully complete the collaborative ECOWEEK workshop with the Workgroup12 to develop a new sustainable product: aroof tile that a mass produced sustainable architectural building material product. Focusing in the design in macro -meso scales, in combination with the use on nanotechnology, the ceramic tile succeed to additional properties: significantcracking resistance, photovoltaic propertieswithout changing the traditional clay surface, high degree ofinsulation performance, self-cleaning, andphotocatalytic properties for air purification. More specifically, the workshop managed to make the new ceramic tile in larger dimensions than the exciting. This led to a number of advantages in construction, such as the reduction by 49% estimation of the roof weight. Also the installation method is faster with significant cost reduction during the installation. If this product were applied in an high density urban area (such as an area Toumpa Thessaloniki) the reduction of the CO2 where calculated to 500,000 kg annually!
The workshop is led by STIMULATE teamexpertsNikos Kehagias,Flexible Fabrication Platform Manager at Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Barcelona, Spain andIoannis Karatasiosresearcher at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the National Center for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’ in Athens, Greece, in cooperation with architectural team KARD ArchitectsDimitris Raidis andAlexandros Kouloukouris, based in Thessaloniki. Special thanks to all W12 participants!
